How to Renew Your First Aid Certificate in Australia

Your First Aid certificate doesn't renew itself, and leaving it until the week it expires — or worse, after it's already lapsed — can leave you unable to work in roles that require current certification. Here's exactly how the renewal process works, and how to avoid the common mistakes that catch people out.

Step 1: Know Your Expiry Date

Your HLTAID011 (Provide First Aid) certificate is valid for 3 years from the issue date. Check the certificate your training provider issued — the issue date and, usually, an explicit expiry date will be printed on it. If you can't find your certificate, contact your original RTO; most, including ORBIT, can look up your enrolment and reissue a digital copy.

Separately, keep in mind that your CPR skills (HLTAID009) are recommended for annual refreshing by the Australian Resuscitation Council, even within your 3-year First Aid certificate window — more on that below.

Step 2: Decide — Full Recertification or CPR-Only Refresher?

This is where most people get confused, so it's worth being precise:

  • If your full HLTAID011 certificate is approaching its 3-year expiry, you need to complete the full Provide First Aid course again — there's no abbreviated "renewal" pathway under the national training package once you're due for full recertification.
  • If your certificate is still within its 3-year window, but it's been roughly a year since you last practiced CPR, you can complete a shorter HLTAID009 (CPR-only) refresher to keep your resuscitation skills current without redoing the entire First Aid qualification.

Employers in higher-risk industries (childcare, aged care, construction) often specifically ask for annual CPR refreshers between full 3-year recertifications — check with your employer if you're unsure which applies to you.

Step 3: Book Your Course Before You Lapse

Don't wait until your certificate has technically expired. Booking your recertification in the weeks before your expiry date means:

  • No gap where you're technically uncertified for a job requirement
  • More flexibility to choose a convenient course date and location, rather than scrambling
  • Avoiding the admin headache of explaining a lapsed certificate to an employer or client

Most providers, ORBIT included, don't require you to wait until the exact expiry date — you can recertify any time in the lead-up.

Step 4: Complete the Course

A First Aid recertification runs the same way as your original course: a blended delivery model with online theory you complete at your own pace, followed by a short face-to-face practical assessment session. The in-person component is where you'll demonstrate CPR technique, bandaging, and other hands-on skills under assessor supervision — this part can't be skipped even if you're renewing, since it's how your competency is actually verified.

Step 5: Receive Your New Certificate

On successful completion, you'll receive a new HLTAID011 (or HLTAID009, for CPR-only refreshers) certificate with a fresh 3-year (or, for CPR-only, informal 1-year) validity window from the date of issue. Keep a digital copy stored somewhere accessible — most employers and clients will ask to see proof of currency at short notice.

What If You Let It Lapse?

If your certificate has already expired, there's no shortcut — you'll need to enrol in the full HLTAID011 course again, covering the complete curriculum rather than an abbreviated renewal. It's a straightforward process, just the same time commitment as your very first course.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers regarding this guide

Q:Can I renew my First Aid certificate without redoing the whole course?

Only your CPR component can be refreshed separately (HLTAID009); the full HLTAID011 certificate requires the complete course once it's due for its 3-year recertification.

Q:How early can I renew before my certificate expires?

There's no fixed minimum — you can book your recertification any time in the weeks or months before your expiry date.

Q:What happens if my certificate has already lapsed?

You'll need to complete the full HLTAID011 course again, as there's no abbreviated renewal pathway for an expired certificate.
